Wouldn't it be cool if Singapore had an official Mixed Martial Arts league where fighters (otherwise known as the athletes) would have professional bouts? Imagine the vigour and life it would bring to the atrocious local sports scene where the only sports people are taught are FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, GOLF and TENNIS- all of which either have a large market audience or rake in large commercial sums of money.

They are nothing but a bane to me.

For those of you in the shadows, Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which two competitors attempt to achieve dominance over one another by utilizing a wide variety of permitted martial arts techniques, including striking and grappling. Well-known MMA organizations include the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride Fighting Championships.

Mixed martial arts was originally based around the concept of pitting different martial arts and fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules, in an attempt to determine which system would be more effective in a real combat situation. Modern MMA competition is an evolution of such events, but rules have been implemented to promote the sport, while at the same time maintaining as much of the original no-holds-barred concept as possible. There is however no general sanctioning body for the sport, and the sets of rules vary according to organization.
The techniques utilized in MMA competition generally fall into two categories:
striking techniques (such as kicks, knees and punches) and grappling techniques (such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns and throws). Some unarmed hand to hand combat techniques are considered illegal in arguably all modern MMA competition, such as biting, eye-gouging, fish-hooking and small joint manipulation. The legality of other techniques such as elbows, headbutts and spinal locks vary according to competition or organization.
Victory is normally gained through a
knockout, a submission, a stoppage by the referee, the fight doctor or a competitor's corner-person, or by a decision by the judges scoring the fight.

Thanks to Wikipedia.com for the detailed explanation.

And how I'd love for this sport to grow in Singapore. People may think it as Violent and Dangerous, but ask that of any martial art- Kyokushin Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai and Boxing..don't all these other sports carry the same risk? One shouldn't be so blind as to assume that there are 'safe' sports as there are 'dangerous' ones. After all, a gun is dangerous if held in the wrong hands, is it not?

But I'd like you to take a look at some of my favourite fighters and a couple of matches here. This includes the world heavyweight champion- Fedor Emelianenko from Russia. Human or Machine, he has proven to be the best fighter in the world to date. His only loss in his carreer owes to a cut in his brow he received from a kick. Apart from that, everyone else who's fought with him has lost by knock out or submission. MY kinda guy.

Also included is Mirko 'Cro-Cop' Filopovic. Cro-cop for short, this ex-special elite force police officer from Croatia rose through the ranks beginning with his K-1 carreer and has intimidated every single opponent he has faced.
Famous for his wins, he is even more infamous with his trademark left high kick or high roundhouse to the head of his opponents. And just to give you a better mental illustration of this man's kicking power, he broke the rib of a 400lbs (180kg) black man with that kick. Oh yea, I suggest you spend a good 30 seconds watching this video. You'll never be so scared in your life. Not that I'm scared or anything.

And at the end of the day, you ask me, why do I wanna do all this? Why do you like it? I just say it beats being a coach potato anytime. I like it, but do you have a problem with that? I've never gone around boasting to people about it. In fact, I've always kept quiet about it. Eventually, I'd reeally like to see people give this a shot.
